Since late 2004 the game
of Sodoku has become extremely popular in a number of
countries all over the world. In the UK The Times have
had a daily sodoku puzzle since 12 November 2004. Other
newspapers in the UK also publish Sudoku puzzles. These
papers include The Guardian, The Independent, The Sun
(which imaginatively calls the sodoku puzzles Sun Doku)
and the Daily Telegraph.
However Sodoku existed long before the
recent popularity in British newspapers. The game was
originally called number place and was published in
New York by Dell magazines. The game then reached Japan
in the 1980s where it originally went by the name
"Sji wa dokushi ni kagiru" which translates
rough to "the numbers must be single". The
game later became known as Sudoku, which means "single
number".
